A White Love

I’ve been reading Don Miller's Blue Like Jazz again. Man, it's good. I hate to be part of any crowd and I know he's so popular right now, but it's for good reason. The guy just writes like Ethan Johns produces. It's honest, entertaining and so inspiring. I was talking to my good friend Nathanial last night, over a hot plate of Pad Thai, and he was reminding me about the chapter on love and how refreshing and amazing it was. The thought of really showing Christ's love without boundaries, reservation or favoritism? What an amazing idea. It’s an idea that really could change the world (to be over-the-top about it).

I really believe that without Christ working through us, it is impossible to truly love. That is not to say that people who do not accept Christ as savior cannot love or even love unconditionally. There are those people who just, “have it”, for lack of better words. The people you strive to be. You know the ones I’m talking about. But there is a fundamental and almost unexplainable difference between the love of Christ through a person and earthly love. Many people have loved me through my short 32 years of life. Some were Christian and some were not. The love I receive from non-Christians is the same love as Christians, because love is love. But I guess what I’m saying about Christ love is that it is complete. It is not only earthly emotion and attachment, but it is also something greater. Something cosmic. Something unexplainable.

I know I don’t love unconditionally. There are people who are easier to love than others. There are some people I really like and are easy to love. There are some people I love but are draining to be around (I call these people emotional vampires). There are some people that I really don’t like at all. And there are a select few that I REALLY don’t like. It’s hard to be patient long enough to develop a relationship with some people to show love. It’s hard to love everyone. It’s impossible. But, that is where Christ comes in. I think that with Christ love it is possible to love everyone. Even if we don’t! Because with Christ love it is not only us loving! It is not just this earthly shell or our emotion or our tainted social environment! It is a true and pure and non-selfish unexplainably amazing love. A white love.

With all my doubts about religion and theology and political, corporate-based Christianity, I do want a white love.

-Steve
